Overview:

The Rodeo Beach, Miwok Trail, and Coastal Trail starts near Rodeo Beach and follows a developed route along the bluffs overseeing the Pacific Ocean. The first 1.5 miles of the trail features a rapid gain of 600 feet, but becomes easier afterwards. The trail has 2 small detours to Battery Townsley, and then to Hill 88, which served as a launching pad for missiles during the Cold War. After that, the loop returns to the parking area just past the Marin Headlands Visitor Center on Mitchell Road. During this hike, you will have gorgeous views of the ocean, Rodeo Beach, the Golden Gate bridge, and surrounding terrain. Although portions of the trail are steep and include steers, the effort is worth the payoff. This trail is also dog-friendly!

Parking Lot:

There is ample free street parking near the meeting location. However, parking can become limited later in the morning, so arriving early is recommended.

Be Prepared:

Please bring:

  • A light windbreaker or jacket (it is often windy and cooler at the summit)
  • At least 1–1.5 liters of water
  • Comfortable walking or hiking shoes (sneakers should be perfectly suitable)
  • A light snack or fruit
  • Hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses

We also recommend dressing in layers, as temperatures at the top can be noticeably cooler than at the start of the hike.
