SUMMARY:Lost Coast
DESCRIPTION:The Lost Coast is a stretch of California coastline so rugged that roads have not conquered it. The remoteness is a rare respite from the rest of the state. There are no mansions tucked along hillsides or congested lines of traffic winding along the cliffs. Here crumbling gashes of the King Range tower from the sea\, blocking the way of everyone not on foot. \nBetween the cliffs and the sea\, the Lost Coast Trail passes along the narrow band of tortured beach. It is the domain of the hiker\, a desolate and severe landscape draped by a pristine ecosystem. The path leads from hidden beaches to expansive vistas at dizzying heights above the surf. Apart from sea lions and the occasional troop of Scouts\, hikers discover pure solitude. The Lost Coast Trail is one of the finest beach backpacking trips found in the United States\, and it has steadily grown in fame and popularity over the years. \nGood thing we are not hiking the entire trail in one day! 😀 We will start our backpacking adventure from Mattole to end at Black Sand Beach. The trail is also dog-friendly. \nWe will head to Wailaki Campground and stay the night there (camping fee: $8) on Friday. The sooner we get there the better as the sites are non-reservable\, and will be available on a first come first serve basis! The campground is just 15 mins from Black Sand Beach where we will park our cars and take the shuttles to Mattole\, where we start our backpacking trip! Shuttle leaves at 7 am\, and it takes about 2 hours to get to the trailhead at Mattole. \nWe gather our belongings and start the hike around 9:30 am\, on 8/20. The first few miles are all deep sand. The sand\, gravel\, and cobblestones are the reasons that make this hike moderately strenuous. Depending on how many miles we hike\, we make sure to camp early to avoid hiking while tides are at their highest. This is a very important concept to understand. If we hike around 6.5 -7 miles\, we get to Cooskie Creek which could be a good location for camping\, but we would still be in impassable zones. If we still have enough energy to hike 2 more miles\, we get to Randall Creek\, which is recommended for setting our camps. (approximately 9 miles\, 4 hours). \nWe may need to wake up early in the dark about 1:00 am to pass the impassable zone while the tides are receding. \nYou need to have headlamps and should feel comfortable to walk along the ocean in the dark. We’ll keep walking till we get to the beginning of impassable zone 3. Depending on when we get to Big Flats\, we may have to take a break\, and enjoy watching whales and sea lions till the tides recede. It is very important to not hike the impassable zones while the tides are high; otherwise\, we will be forced to scramble for higher grounds! \nOn the 3rd day\, we’ll be hiking the shortest distance and we’ll be heading back to Black Sands Beach. \nWhat to bring: bear canister (possible to rent at the offices)\, instant oatmeals\, finger food/snack\, hiking/backpacking gears\, rain jacket\, tent.  Along our route\, there are numerous little fresh water springs available\, hence\, no need to carry so much water with ourselves. It is instead recommended to bring water filters. \nYou’ll be joining this event knowing that it is NOT a commercial camping event\, and you’ll be only paying for the permits and their associated costs . All the other costs such as shuttling to Mattole\, food\, drinks\, is on you. \nThis is an adventurous hike and you should be aware of all the potential dangers. Starting from the floor of the Valley\, we’ll attempt to summit Yosemite’s most iconic and awe-inspiring landmark: Half Dome! It’s not an easy journey to get to the 8\,836 foot summit\, but we’ll be rewarded with unparalleled views. This trip has been a Yosemite classic ever since its first ascent in 1875. Since then\, thousands of individuals have made the trek. This trip is on every High Sierra hiker’s to-do list\, and for good reason. Experience the ultimate Yosemite adventure! \nOn this three day event\, we’ll be exploring the park\, hiking the Half Dome\, learn about unique features of Yosemite\, and will boost our mental health via nature wandring in the Yosemite National Park. \nTo join the event\, you are NOT required to hike the half dome on Thursday. Instead\, you can explore the valley and the falls. If you plan to hike the half dome\, you should be physically fit. Hiking the Half Dome is on a first come first served basis. \nDay 1 \nIf hiking the Half Dome: \nDistance: 17 miles (22.7 km) roundtrip via the Mist Trail \nElevation: 8\,836 ft (2\,694 m) \nDifficulty: Strenuous \nTime: 10-14 hours \nBegin at: Happy Isles via the Mist Trail \nFeatures: – Rises nearly 4\,800 ft above Yosemite Valley – The Half Dome Cable Route – Ultimate Yosemite Day Hike – John Muir Trail round trip 16.5 Miles – Astonishing Views from the Half Dome hike \nIf NOT: \nYou have the choices of exploring the valley\, such as Vernal Fall\, Nevada Fall\, Tunnel View spot\, Yosemite Wilderness center and the museum. Also\, you can join the Half Dome hikers up to the top of the falls\, approximately 7 miles. \nDay 2 \nExploring the city of Groveland. The city offeres a lot of activities and access to facilities for the residents. We will be picnicking along the Pine Moutain Lake Marina. At the lake you have the option of swimming\, kayaking\, stand up paddling\, etc. \nThe Trip: \nEverybody will be arriving to the cabin in Groveland by 9:00 pm\, Wednesday 7/27. We will head out by 4:30 am on Thursday 7/28 and will gather in Yosemite Valley at the Happy Isles trailhead at 5:45 am. \nAfter introductions\, packing up our gear and lacing up our boots\, we will hike up the Mist Trail to Little Yosemite Valley. Even though the literal high point of the trip does not come until we reach Half Dome\, the trail past Vernal and Nevada Falls on our way is simply incredible. Please note that our access to the submit may be denied due to thunderstorms\, rains\, etc. If all goes well\, we should be back down by 7:30 pm. \nAfter the hike\, we’ll be heading back to the cabin\, equipped with an outdoor hot tub and barbecue stand\, to revive. \nOn Friday we will be hanging out in Groveland. The city offers lots of activity such as tennis playing\, golfing\, kayaking\, swimming in the lake and pools only for the residents of the city. These lakes are great spots to take a dip at and to relax. This hike is an enjoyable jaunt around the less visited southern part of Stevens creek county park. It features expansive views of the surrounding hillsides as well as typical fauna found among the lovely oak covered hillsides. Coyotes are frequently seen in the park.
Most of the trails are well maintained fire roads\, and about 70% of the hike is in the shade. We will take a short break about half way through the hike.

Leave your cares behind and immerse yourself in nature to see how your cognitive function increases. \nCome see art exhibits\, hear inspiring stories\, play creativity games and enjoy good food and music.This event will invite people of all ages to join an initiative for social good. \nYou will learn about actions we will take to build a healthier community and to maintain a healthier environment. Bring your family\, friends and neighbors for this fun outdoor celebration of the Persian New Year (Nowruz)\, which has a lot to do with nature. \nRegular admission – $25.00 each \nVIP Admission – $35.00 each. The views from the top over the entire Bay Area are very rewarding. Mission Peak Loop features beautiful wild flowers. On a clear day hikers can see the skylines of Oakland\, San Francisco and San Jose. The trail is a well maintained gravel base until the last half mile. From this point the trail is hard pack dirt and rocky. The trail offers a number of activity options\, such as horse riding and is accessible year-round🌲🌿nnThere is no fee for parking\, however on a busy day you may be required to park a little west\, on one of the side streets. Dogs are allowed on leash in developed areas.nnGUEST POLICY: If you have a friend who wants to come – have them sign up for the meetup and then they can sign up for the event you’re going on.
